Congrats to the Sandwich Girls Lacrosse State Champions

P SANDWICH IS STATE CHAMPION Y' Sandwich Girls Lacrosse | MIAA Division 4 State Champions
This community just watched something truly special unfold. The Sandwich Girls Lacrosse team has claimed the MIAA Division 4 State Championship — and as someone who has had the honor of coaching these young women, I can tell you: this title was earned.
We are so incredibly proud of every single athlete on this team. Their grit, their commitment, and their heart on that field brought a banner home to Sandwich. Congratulations, Blue Knights.
Champions Are Built in the Off-Season
State championships don't happen overnight — and as a physical therapist and coach, I want to be direct with you about what actually creates a championship-level athlete. The work that happens between seasons is where the real gains are made. The trophy is just the receipt.
If you are a young athlete (or the parent of one) who wants to compete at a higher level, perform with less injury, and show up stronger every season, here is what the science - and clinical practice — tells us matters most:
1. Get in the Gym Strength training is not optional for competitive athletes - it is the foundation. Off-season lifting builds the muscular resilience that protects joints, improves speed, and translates directly to on-field power. Female athletes in particular benefit enormously from strength training, both for performance and for reducing their significantly higher risk of ACL injury.
Focus on compound movements: squats, deadlifts, hip hinges, single-leg work Prioritize proper mechanics before adding load Work with a qualified professional to build a program that matches your sport demands

2. Sleep Like a Champion Sleep is the single most underutilized performance tool available to athletes. During deep sleep, your body releases growth hormone, repairs tissue, consolidates motor patterns, and regulates cortisol. Chronic sleep deprivation increases injury risk, impairs reaction time, reduces strength gains, and tanks mental performance. Teen athletes need 8-10 hours per night - non-negotiable Consistent sleep and wake times regulate your hormonal rhythms Screens off 30-60 minutes before bed — your nervous system needs time to downshift
3. Fuel Your Body to Perform You cannot out-train a poor diet — and under-fueling is one of the most common and preventable performance limiters we see in young female athletes. Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a real and serious condition that affects bone density, hormonal health, and recovery long before an athlete even knows something is wrong.
Eat enough — to support both training and growth. Don't skip breakfast or pre-workout nutrition; your muscles need fuel to adapt. Hydration matters as much as food — even mild dehydration impairs performance and decisionmaking.
Is Your Athlete Ready for the Off-Season? At CCPT, we specialize in keeping athletes healthy, strong, and performing at their ceiling. Whether your athlete needs a movement screen, injury prevention programming, return-to-sport guidance, or a full physical therapy plan, we're here. Reach out to schedule a consultation - because the offseason is where the next championship starts.
To the Blue Knights: you showed this community what happens when young women commit to something bigger than themselves. We are in your corner every step of the way - on the field and off.
