What is PRP and is it for me? (Yes, I know that rhymes!)

You've heard of PRP injections by now. You have may have heard us mention it to you has one of your non-surgical options, but you know it's another out of pocket expense. Maybe now your doctor or surgeon is even recommending it instead of surgery or cortisone. Are wondering, "What in the world is a PRP injection and how do they work?"

Well... PRP is an acronym that stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. What happens is your blood is drawn and then is spun in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates components of your blood into layers:

A layer of red blood cells "hematocrit layer." A yellow-golden liquid called "plasma".

In the plasma there are many platelets that contain growth factors. Normally when an injury has occured (i.e cut yourself, break a bone, sprain a ligament etc.) these platelets are the "first responders" on the scene. They detect an injury and release growth factors to the area. This is the first stage of the healing response.

• The blood that is drawn and separated is processed to hyper concentrate these platelets and then used to inject directly into the injured area.

Thus kick starting the healing response, but in a hyper concentrated manner.

Around four weeks post-PRP therapy, the healing process shifts from regeneration to strengthening. The newly formed collagen and repaired tissue begin to mature, becoming more structured and resilient. You can gradually return to normal activities.
