Is TMD on the Rise? Or are we just getting more calls?

TMD (commonly called TMJ) stands for TemporoMandibular Disorder. Symptoms of TMD disorders may include: Pain or tenderness in the jaw. Aching pain in and around the ear. Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing. Aching facial pain. Headache. Neck pain. Eye pain. Locking of the joint, making it hard to open or close your mouth. Tooth pain that occurs along with jaw tenderness.

Depending on the severity, this can impact the ability to speak, chew, swallow, make facial expressions, and even breathe. TMJ disorders also can cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew.

TMD is no longer seen as a condition confined solely to the areas of the jaws and teeth. Research has found that 85% of patients with TMD also suffer from other conditions - These conditions include allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic headache, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, neck and low back pain, sleep disorders, and vulvodynia.

Why are we telling you all about TD? Well, we keep getting phone calls from patients, dentists and oral surgeons, asking if we treat TMD. And the answer is YES, we do!

First, we will evaluate your symptoms and determine if it is something we can help you with. If the origin of your symptoms is musculoskeletal, then we will treat the root cause and manage the painful symptoms. Then will we work with you to evaluate sleep position, ergonomics, posture, and stressors to set you up for long term success.

IF, the symptoms are NOT within our scope of practice, we will refer you to the most appropriate specialist for your specific needs.
